Cider, floods, cardigans, hats!
For some unfathomable reason, my yarn swift won’t spin today. I can’t imagine what might be wrong with it.
Happy Halloween! It was a warm, sunny autumn day. Not too many trick-or-treaters rang my doorbell, though, so I still have a full box of mini chocolate bars upstairs. Mmm, O’Henry. Mmm, Reese’s. Sometimes I’m almost glad that my system can’t handle a lot of chocolate, because I certainly have a taste for it.
I’m boggled that November’s here. January feels like five minutes and a hundred years ago at the same time, if that makes sense. Summer, in particular, did seem to pass quickly, which suits me just fine as I’ve always liked the chillier months better.
I need to find my mulling spices (buried somewhere in the boxes from my apartment’s kitchen), but for now, I have a tin of caramel apple cider from the Second Cup. It’s delicious.
Three days ago, 100 mm of rain fell in less than a day, and the small brook behind the house swelled to overflowing, rising more than four feet and flooding the park. If I’d been able to do something ridiculous like climb a tree, I could have taken much better photos, but all I could snap was a limited view of the not-so-submerged areas. I’d loved to have gotten photos of the rapids flowing down over the hill. The water’s back down to its usual level and the park has dried out; now that I think about it, I should have taken a ‘normal’ photo to post for comparison.
You know, I’m grateful that the only flooding I’ve ever had to deal with has been limited to overflowing brooks and one storm surge in 1992 that brought the ocean to my back doorstep (literally).
On a fibre-related note, it’s full steam ahead on Operation Holiday Gifts. I have three small knits, one larger knit, and one small weaving project–perfectly reasonable given a two-month timeframe. One gift has to be ready for the beginning of December so that it’ll arrive at its overseas destination before Xmas, but I’m aiming for the rest to be finished around the 20th. No Xmas Eve knitting for me, thanks.
Carolyn’s finished! I wove in all the ends on Thursday evening, and after washing laid it out on a plastic sheet in the upstairs bathroom with the heat cranked up. It was dry in just over 24 hours–pretty good, by my standards. Photos tomorrow, with the help of my tripod and camera timer. I’m pleased with it, but I’ll save the details for the FO post.
Have I mentioned how much I love the Woodrose/Natural colour combination?
After I finished sorting out buttons for the cardigan, I swatched for Ophelia with Plymouth Homestead. I really enjoyed my first taste of the yarn; it’s an undyed loosely-twisted 2-ply pure wool that’s pleasantly soft and squishy. I’ll probably cast on tomorrow, after I work on one of my gift knits–a tweed Habitat hat.
Eek. It’s late. Bedtime!
